MIXED USE
Year : Spring 2024 CORE 2
Instructor : Leeland Mcphail
These three projects developed through an open-ended process, without knowing what the next step would be. Beginning with a pavilion, the work gradually expanded into an observatory tower, a pathway, and finally a space for play and spirituality. Throughout this sequence, my main intention was to integrate each stage of the design through a consistent architectural language, while respecting and reinterpreting the decisions made in the previous steps.
The pathways, which were originally drawn from the top of the hill to the bottom, were created before the final program of play and spirituality was introduced. Rather than replacing those earlier lines, I chose to project and penetrate them into the buildings, allowing them to become staircases, walls, thresholds, and spatial boundaries. This process was about fully embracing what already existed in the design and allowing those lines to become entangled with the new architectural elements. The act of embracing and playing with existing lines extends into the buildings, constructing spaces for spirituality and play.
Three LIittle Pigs
“Bone & Skin”, “Split to be Connected”, “Detour”. Those were the keywords that I used for the first two projects, a pavilion and an observatory tower. For the third project, I aimed to make all spaces feel like a forest encouraging people to wander and delay the time to reach the destination.
Building Plan & Ground Plan
To combine two different programs that require different levels of noise in one site, I designed the spaces to become quieter as they rise vertically and go deeper diagonally. To create a space for spirituality, I used continuous squares to represent obssessive thoughts and elevators to break the chain by allowing light into the buildings. Two elevators were used as tools to both lock and connect the models together. Additionally, all buildings have blurred boundaries by overlapping their floors, roofs, and stairs.
